Special Days This Issue

Mother’s Day, May 13

In the United States, Mother’s Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (famous for writing the words to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”). Anna Jarvis held a ceremony in 1907 in Grafton, West Virginia, to honor her mother, who had died two years earlier. Anna began a campaign to create a national holiday honoring mothers. She and her supporters wrote to ministers, businessmen and politicians, and they were successful in their efforts.

In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize the new holiday, and the nation followed in 1914 when the Wilson administration declared the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day. Jarvis used white carnations as a symbol for mothers, because carnations represented sweetness, purity and the endurance of a mother’s love. (Today, white carnations represent a mother who has died, while red carnations represent a living mother.)

Father’s Day, June 17

According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise. In 1972, during the Nixon administration, Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.

Healthy Talk

Start The Day Right, Head Outside And See The Light!

If Monday morning finds you not too eager to start a new week, the good news is: You can ban blue Mondays and hazardous hump days for good.

It’s easier now because it’s spring. The early morning sunshine can make you feel energetic and can boost your mood say authorities at the Sleep and Mood Disorders Laboratory at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

Maybe you’ve noticed that you already feel more awake in the morning. It’s because the time when dawn begins affects the body’s circadian rhythm.

To get your rhythm reset even better, get outside as soon as you wake up. An early morning walk is ideal but stepping out on your apartment balcony can help. Stretch and loosen up. Face the sun and inhale deeply as you raise your arms. Imagine that you are pulling energy-boosting light into your body.  Remember, if you take that walk you’ll be brighter and smarter when you get to work.

 When you’re in pain…

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic say that when you are in pain, exercise is probably the last thing on your mind. But it could be more important than you think.  (Be sure to follow the advice of your doctor though.)

Regular exercise is a versatile weapon in the fight against chronic pain. It may seem difficult to start, but your body will thank you, say the Mayo people.

What’s Making You Sick?

You are about to discover something that is presenting a real health risk to you and your family, and the proactive steps you can take to minimize that risks. This is something that you can’t see, taste, or touch but it’s quickly becoming one of the biggest health threats to families. …it’s your indoor air quality. Uncover and prevent this hidden health threat today.

The reason indoor air is such a problem today is because we have become so energy efficient. Our homes are sealed up tight – saving us on energy, but at the same time setting the stage for an environment of indoor pollution. Now, we all know how dangerous polluted outdoor can be but according to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) indoor air is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air! And today we spend about 90% of our time in these sealed up tight homes – trapped with all that indoor air.  The adverse effects on our health can range from mild irritations to our eyes and throat…to lifelong allergies, asthma, or worse. According the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) there are 3 things you can do to combat the problem of unhealthy indoor air.  (www.epa.gov)

  • Source Control. This simply means get to the source of the pollution and contain it or eliminate it.
  • A second way to improve your indoor air quality is to bring some of the outdoor air inside.
  • Air Cleaners. The EPA also had this to say, “Keep the house clean. House dust mites, pollens, animal dander, and other allergy-causing agents can be reduced, although not eliminated, through regular cleaning.” When choosing an air cleaner do your research! Most air cleaners will claim to remove the usual allergens, but the higher end ones will also remove bacteria, viruses, and VOC’s.  (Toxic off gasses.)

When walking on solid surface flooring, the dust, dander, and dust mite body parts are kicked back into the air; whereas, your carpet and rugs are like big filters that traps pollutants. The American Lung Assoc. says, “Carpets may trap pollutants like dust mites, pet dander…particle pollution, lead, mold spores, pesticides, dirt, and dust.” (lung.org). When carpet becomes full or overloaded with pollutants they are redistributed back into the air with every step you take. Airborne particulates not only land on your furniture, but you and your children breath those pollutants into your lungs which may be causing an allergic reaction. The best action is regular carpet and rug cleaning maintenance.

Has the quality of your indoor air become an issue? We have been a dealer for an Indoor Air Filter System for over a decade that’s proven to provide relief to allergy suffers from pollutants, VOC’s and biological threats. Remember, carpet to a “filter” that gets full and needs to be cleaned. Is your carpet full? If it’s been 6-12 months since you had your carpets professionally cleaned, then the answer is “Yes!”
